A Troubled High School Student Displays Quite A Few Alcohol-Related Issues, Gets Expelled From School, And Has To See The School Psychologist

Stephen was a eighteen year old high school senior who was manifesting several alcohol-related issues at school. Therefore, the principal explained to him that he had to see Miss Pender, the school therapist, before he would be permitted to come back to school.

Later that day when Stephen went home after school, he had to go over his school situation with his Mother and Father. His Mom and Dad were "fairly traditional" and explained to Stephen that getting thrown out of school was not a possible educational game plan. They told Stephen that failing to graduate from high school would most probably be like a lead weight around his feet that could conceivably impede his educational achievement for the rest of his adult life. Furthermore, Stephen's parents were very upset that he was drinking in the first place and drinking with his friends in the second.

It was evident that his parents were absolutely in accord with Stephen's principal and explained to Stephen that he needs to see Miss Pender, the school therapist. After his talk with his Mom and Dad, Stephen in due course agreed to see Miss Pender the next school day. So Stephen phoned the school and scheduled an appointment to see Miss Pender the next day during his sixth period class.

When Stephen arrived at his scheduled appointment with Miss Pender, she without pause looked at all of the alcohol-related difficulties Stephen had gotten into and asked him if he knew why his recent alcohol-related behavior was such a cause for concern.

Quite sincerely, Stephen was unsure why the principal explained to him that he had to see a school counselor. As he expressed to Miss Pender, why should he see a professional therapist about his drinking situation? Because virtually all of his friends drink the same amount that he does, in essence, drinking shouldn't be such a big issue. Stated more precisely, if nearly everybody is drinking, why is this such a major concern?

In a word, Stephen's involvement with teenage alcohol abuse was starting to thwart his ability to function as an accountable young man. As verbalized by Miss Pender, "Just because most of your peers drink wine, beer, wine coolers, or hard liquor does not mean that it is the appropriate behavior for you."

Luckily, Miss Pender was extremely well prepared for her scheduled time with Stephen. She showed him reports and research studies she had highlighted that outlined diverse drinking facts and statistics that applied to most people in general. Then she showed Stephen quite a bit of data that applied mainly to teens.

After Miss Pender went over the aforesaid teenage alcohol and teen alcohol abuse statistics and facts, it was evident that what Miss Pender disclosed to Stephen was a real source of discovery for him. Why? Because for the first time in his young life, someone not only took the time to articulate the long term and the short term outcomes of alcoholism and alcohol abuse, but she also took the time to verify what she was saying with alcoholism and alcohol abuse statistics and facts that related to people in general, and particularly to adolescents.

Undeniably, it was almost as if a light went on and Stephen instantly comprehended why he should not be engaging in abusive and excessive drinking with or without his classmates any longer. Stephen thanked Miss Pender for her concern and for the information she presented and then accepted her reinstatement into class.
