A Young Gentleman Needs Treatment For His Severe Depression, Relationship Issues, And For His Drug Dependency And Alcoholism
Nearly three months ago I had dinner with a forty-five-year-old man named Benjamin who experiences severe depression, has relationship issues, and who is addicted to alcohol and drugs. As stated by Benjamin, it is his alcoholism and drug addiction and his acute depression that has had the most to do with his continual relationship difficulties.
As stated by Benjamin, he is so crushed by his relationship issues and by both of his medical conditions that he in effect has no aspiration to achieve much of anything. What is particularly unfortunate about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin managed to complete one semester of graduate school in Italian.
Benjamin's condition makes me wonder if he is an example of an individual who can look within and see his drug addiction and drinking problems and do something constructive about these problems. Or, to the contrary, if he is someone who has to hit the very bottom before he gets alcohol and drug dependency treatment that results in lasting sobriety.
It may be asked how therapy would help his drug and alcohol addiction. First of all, there are several newly developed doctor-prescribed meds that can help Benjamin avoid an alcohol or a drug relapse, help him through the drug and alcohol detox process, and help him through his withdrawal symptoms. Second, in rehab he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the diverse stages of alcoholism.
Third, Benjamin would learn to accept the fact that there is utterly nothing beneficial about substance abuse and excessive and hazardous drinking. In a similar manner, he would also learn that messing around with one or both of these unhealthy situations is the road to deteriorating health, a premature death, shattered relationships, financial difficulties, poor work and school performance, and legal problems. Fourth, counseling for his relationship problems and his depression might help him deal with these psychological problems more effectively and perhaps create less of a need for him to engage in additive behavior. And finally, in therapy he could also learn more about the diverse symptoms of alcoholism that he has manifested.
Since Benjamin doesn't have the motivation to carry out much of anything in his life, it is apparent that he desperately needs a little hope for a more productive existence. And the unfortunate thing is that hope is all around Benjamin if he could only get to the place in life to get the treatment he needs for his extreme depression and addiction and remain in his treatment program.
Benjamin is clearly too young to be crushed in life. He doesn't understand this at the moment but if he can learn how to remove himself from alcohol and drugs via drug and alcohol rehabilitation and get the counseling he requires for his acute depression, he can turn his life around and begin living with passion, self-respect, and direction.
Enhanced relationships, a wonderful life, self respect, and affirmative change are certainly a reality for Benjamin. But only if he can become inspired to obtain the medical rehab he needs, follow through with his treatment protocol, live his life in a healthy and addiction-free way, and learn how to foster a more positive attitude about life.
