Adolescent Alcohol Abuse, The Correlation Between Hazardous Drinking And Coping Skills, And The Need For Coping Skills Education

Recent teenage alcohol abuse statistics demonstrate the fact that alcohol abuse among teenagers is increasing in the United States. What are some of the reasons for this? Quite a few alcohol addiction specialists state that liquor, wine, and beer ads brought into being by the media are a primary reason for the proliferation of teen alcohol abuse.

Other alcohol abuse experts argue that the increase in adolescent alcohol abuse is due to the acceptability and ease of access of liquor, beer, and wine in our society. Still other alcohol dependency professionals argue that many of our young people involve themselves in dangerous drinking because of the increased apprehension that they face.

From a slightly different perspective, because both parents in many families work full or part-time, the lack of parental guidance evidently has to play a key role in the proliferation of adolescent alcohol abuse. And finally, an assortment of alcohol abuse professionals argue that the escalation of teenage alcohol abuse is due, in some way, to our lax society.

One feature of teen alcohol abuse that looks like it is lacking in the alcohol addiction research findings, alternatively, is the absence of educational courses that teach teens how to augment their coping skills so that their careless drinking behavior is extensively reduced or eradicated. More to the point, scientific research has revealed that there is an indirect connection between poor coping skills and hazardous and excessive drinking.

In actual fact, this means that the poorer the coping skills, the greater the incidence of alcohol abuse. To the degree that this is a valid claim, why isn't coping skills training a major part of the educational core curriculum in all of our elementary schools, junior high schools, and high schools?

Let us construct a scenario for illustrative purposes. Let us imagine a society in which all people are taught how to achieve excellent coping skills all the way from kindergarten up to and including their senior year in high school. In such a society, when life gets difficult, individuals who are "coping skills masters" will be able to respond in a more healthy and more productive way, contrary to others who are unsuccessful in their attempts to put their coping skills into action.

More specifically, students who show evidence of high-quality coping skills will be more able to think logically and engage in excellent decision making as opposed to students who, because they were unsuccessful in their attempts to develop quality coping skills, are attracted to the "quick fix" of abusive and excessive drinking.

What would happen in the above "ideal" society, what's more, if teenagers not only obtained first-rate coping skills education but also received an excellent education that stressed the long term and short term destructive outcomes associated with alcohol abuse and drug abuse? Emphasizing these types of teenage alcohol and drug abuse facts, along with more advanced coping skills education, it is asserted, would help teenagers stay away from the obvious charm correlated with adolescent drinking and, accordingly, would radically reduce the risky drinking behavior exhibited by adolescents in our country.

There are unquestionably various compelling reasons why so many of our adolescents drink in a risky manner. Such a knotty issue demands a wide-ranging and relevant response by our parents, educators, politicians, and students so that our adolescents can learn how to cope with life's predicaments in a more productive and accountable manner instead of resorting to abusive and unhealthy drinking to solve their problems.
